1 week itinerary in pictures

Argentina's northwest can be easily defined with one word: colour. And there are lots of them. It's kind of crazy if you think about it, because the first thing that crosses your mind when you think about the north is that it is actually a desert. So... how can a desert feature so many colours? How can so many types of landscapes coexist in such a small space?

For those of you, who love nature and photography, this is a great place to visit. Hopefully, I will convince you to do so.

How did it start?

The truth is, it was my cousin's idea. I was returning from one of my long walks when a message popped up on my phone. The idea looked kind of crazy at first, mostly because of the dates. She suggested we should go on Christmas Eve till January 1st. The company where she works gave her the whole free week as a benefit and the company where I work has the same benefit, so the idea wasn't so crazy at all. I told her I needed to think about it, but after a short thinking I concluded that it was time to start to learn about my country a little more.

We began to look at maps, watched some videos about the area and concluded that the trip had to start at Tucuman so that we only moved north towards Jujuy, the topmost province of Argentina, limiting with Bolivia and Chile. In the middle, we were passing through Salta, where we would visit one of the places I always wanted to see as a child: Tren a las Nubes.

Hiring a car was mandatory and, in order to visit all the important places, we had to constantly be on the move, sleeping at most two nights in the same spot until reaching Jujuy. We read that a 4x4 is not required for the majority of the roads, and the ones that require it can be easily avoided, so a simple car would do. We also knew beforehand that in the majority of this cases, a guided tour can be hired for that not so easily accessible spots.

The time of the year was going to be kind of problematic. Firstly because of the higher temperatures during the day, and the lower temperatures in the night. Summer is also the rainy season. So don't be fooled: some warm clothes are required too. The other problem of the time of the year was actually the first and the last day of our trip. We were going to reach Tucuman by plane on Christmas, so big part of the attractions and stores were surely going to be closed. The same applied to our last day, which was January 1st. We had to organise our activities in such a way that this didn't affect our plans.
